Credit Union SFL Division 3 Round 11

St Pats 0-14 Firies 0-12

St Pats secured their division 3 status for next year when they overcame a dogged Firies challenge to win by 2 points last Sunday afternoon ion Blennerville in the last round of the County League.

St Pats started the brighter side and were 2points up through captain, David O’Callaghan and Fergal O’Brien after 5 minutes. Firies’ Padraig De Brun was sent for an early shower when he was black carded for dissent after 9 minutes and was replaced by William Courtney. This didn’t deter the home side as they added a couple more points having enjoyed plenty possession and the defence pushing up on their markers and turning over the ball several times. Firies first point came after 14 minutes through a free converted by Aaron Flynn and he added another from play 5 minutes later. The point of the half came late towards the end of the half when Eoin Greaney collected the ball, turned and pointed from an acute angle which was acknowledged by both sets of supporters. The last point of the half was converted from free by Aaron Flynn deep into injury time after Niall Donohue received treatment from a knock later in the half. The home side had plenty of possession and missed some scorable chances but were still good enough to keep the away side at bay as they led by 8 points to 5 at the short whistle.

Firies came out strongly this half with inter-county player, Jack Sherwood moved to the half-forward line and this made a difference as he was responsible for his side’s first point of the half and was instrumental to the next 2 as they drew level for the first time after 6 minutes played. Brendan Poff put St Pats ahead with a fine effort 3 minutes later only to be cancelled out by Sean Burke. Paul McMahon held off the challenge of his marker to put St Pats ahead from close range. Fergal O’Brien scored St Pats last 4 points and the defence line withstood the late surge of Firies who had the opportunity to draw the match late on when Aaron Flynn was impeded inside the square for a penalty. He stepped up to take the kick but his effort was saved by Paudie Bailey who parried the ball away to safety denying the opposition another goal scoring opportunity. Sean Burke pointed 2 minutes after normal time but it was not enough as the home side romped to a victory on a score line of 0-14 to 0-12.

There were brilliant displays from both sides with Jack Sherwood making his now familiar darting runs into the opposition’s area, Aaron Flynn’s 7 points which included 4 frees, St Pats Kieran Dwyer and Tommy Lynch leading from the back, David O’Callaghan’s work rate but Fergal O’Brien took the game to the visitors especially late in the second half with his direct play and accurate point scoring with both feet, contributing 5 points.
Congratulations to the management team and all involved with the panel.
